Upon winning the World Cup, Messi promises to continue his career with Argentina.

Lionel Messi, a star for Argentina, promised on Sunday to keep representing his nation even after achieving his lifelong goal of winning the World Cup.

After Argentina's thrilling World Cup final triumph against France on penalties, Messi, 35, said on Argentine television, "I want to stay enjoying a few more matches as world champion."

However, when the Argentina captain won the one significant international title that was lacking from his collection, Messi acknowledged that his career was practically over.

Prior to the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner scoring his penalty shot in the shootout that Argentina won 4-2, the Paris Saint-Germain front scored two goals in the dramatic and tumultuous final that finished 3-3 after 120 riveting minutes.

Messi stated, "Obviously, I would like to conclude my career with this, and I cannot ask for more."

"These are my final years, so my career is almost done."

And after so many setbacks on the grandest platform in football, including falling short against Germany in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, Messi says he always thought his moment will come.

"It's weird that it happened at the time it did, but it's great," he remarked.

"It's incredible that it could go in this direction. I earlier proclaimed that God would grant me this, and I don't know why, but I had a sense that it would happen now.

After Argentina lost a two-goal lead late in the game for the second straight game after defeating the Netherlands in the quarterfinals a week earlier, Messi turned his focus to the game itself and stated it was difficult to understand.

When Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick of goals—two in the final minutes of regulation and one in extra time—he pinned Argentina back and forced penalties. Argentina had led 2-0 at halftime and had gone up 3-2 in extra time.

According to Messi, "It was a really bizarre game, much like the other one against the Netherlands, and then when we went up in extra time it occurred again."

But, he said, the World Cup trophy "is magnificent."

As Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni, winger Angel Di Maria, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez sobbed after the game, Messi embraced his family and teammates.

Since making his Argentina debut in 2005, Messi has appeared 172 times and scored 98 goals.
