LUSAIL: Argentina's star player Lionel Messi scored from the spot before Julian Alvarez netted two goals to propel Argentina to a commanding 3-0 victory over Croatia and secure a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final.

After their convincing victory, Argentina—two-time champions—acquired a final spot after an eight-year absence since they last faced Germany in the 2014 competition.

Messi, who is eager to end his incredible career by winning his first World Cup, gave his team the lead with a well executed first-half penalty and secured the win by providing the third goal with precision.

Dominik Livakovic correctly anticipated that Messi would go to his left, but his dive was ineffective since the Argentine's expertly struck shot soared high.Five minutes later, Alvarez picked up the ball in his own half and started a lengthy dribble toward the goal after a break from a corner, which increased Argentina's advantage.

Argentina had perfect control of the game in the first half when Alvarez rode shaky tackles from Josip Juranovic and Borna Sosa as the Croatian defence withdrew.

Messi then provided a brilliant assist in the second half, harassing 20-year-old defender Josko Gvardial down the right before leaving him behind and dragging the it back to Alvarez, who calmly sunk the goal to ensure a commanding win.

Argentina will now either face determined Morocco or the defending champions France in the final on Sunday, and they will be firmly betting on themselves to win their third gold medal.

AL RAYYAN: Luka Modric's Croatia defeated courageous Morocco 2-1 to round off their FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign on a positive note, moving them up to third place overall in the massive tournament.

The third-place play-off of the current world cup got off to a fast start as Croatia scored first and Morocco stopped them in the first nine minutes of the game.

With an incredible header in the seventh minute, Josko Gvardiol for Croatia gave them the lead right away.

After Ivan Perisic deflected Lovro Majer's cross into the box back towards a diving Gvardiol, who buried his header into the corner, the runners-up from the previous tournament, Croatia, surged.

Although Croatia took an early lead, it was short-lived as a determined Morocco scored an incredible equaliser just two minutes later when Hakim Ziyech's free-kick looped up off of Croatian midfielder Lovro Majer and dropped nicely for Achraf Dari, allowing him to head past Dominik Livakovic.

Before halftime, Croatia regained the lead after Bilal El Khannouss of Morocco lost control deep in his own half. Mislav Orsic then curled the ball brilliantly via the post from the corner of the box.

Croatia defeated Morocco 2-1 and finished their campaign with a bronze medal thanks to Orsic's incredible header late in the first half.

With its victory over Morocco, Croatia became the 11th consecutive European team to finish first.
